Behind The Lens
Location
This portrait was taken in my home studio.Time
We started on the make up at around 11:30am, I had briefed the mua well in advance and we'd had several discussions, so we knew what to expect on the day. The entire look was complete by 2:30pm and I started shooting soon afterwards.Lighting
The lighting is very simple, I used one Elinchrom RX1 in a gridded soft box, nothing too technical at all and a very basic system.Equipment
I shot using my Nikon D800 with 35mm lens, I fixed it to a monopod to give me some stability.Inspiration
In February 2017, my sister was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour, this completely turned my world upside-down. She was admitted to hospital within days and specialists carried out an urgent operation to remove the tumour which was sitting just behind her left temple. I used 4 flowers on this portrait, 1 yellow to represent the removal of the tumour a three pink to represent my sisters children who supported her unconditionally throughout the trauma. The bandage indicates the healing process. Whilst her body was pale and weak, she remained beautiful and positive throughout.Editing
Very little, I added some contrast in PS and removed a couple of marks from the models skin.In my camera bag
Always carry Nikon bodies and a selection of lenses from Nikon, Sigma and Toking.Feedback
For this particular image, I was trying to capture and portray something that is very close to my heart for obvious reasons. I had a clear vision of what I wanted to do and I discussed this with the MUA and the model in advance as I feel it is important for them to be a part of your story. Plan ahead, think clearly and don't try too hard, the main thing is to enjoy and have fun creating, regardless of the theme or circumstances.
