This natural light portrait of Lydia was captured at my home studio in the North West U.K.Time
It was shot around noon during a fresh spring day.Lighting
The lighting for this portrait is all natural, which was coming in from a window in my studio to the models right hand side. I positioned the model in a pose where the light would gently creep around her shoulder and highlight a contour on her back to help with separation from a dark background.Equipment
Tis portrait was captured using my Nikon D800 and my ever faithful 'Nifty 50' Nikon lens, which is great for natural light portraits.Inspiration
Lydia is naturally beautiful with striking blue eyes and I asked her to shoot a natural light portrait with me because on the majority of her work, she was studio based or on location using various lighting methods. I was inspired by her strong look and wanted to add something far more simple to mine and her portfolio, something that casting directors and booking managers could look at and see the real Lydia.Editing
I tend to slightly adjust colours in Camera Raw when shooting this style of portrait, editing an image like this goes against all that I'm trying to achieve. Keeping it simple, fresh and clean works best for me and the model.In my camera bag
Nikon always, my collection consisted of 2 x D800, 1 x D810 and 1 x Z6. I like to have a collection of lenses and mostly shoot using Nikon lenses, I do however carry a selection of Sigma Art lenses. A single speedlight and stand is always in my camera bag.Feedback
My honest advice is to just go with your own creative instinct, following others will never allow you to be the photographer you were born to be. Inspiration of course is always great and I take lots of it from the world around us in various art forms. The more you shoot, the better you'll become, don't be scared to break the rules of photography, I see them as a guide and then my creative eye takes over.
