I have seen many aurora shots, but I like this one because it's not so busy. The single green line provides the perfect sense of scale and beauty in nature.

Location
This photo was taken in northern Norway, near Tromso. I spend a week here, specifically to hunt the northern lights. I got extremely lucky, getting to see it 4 nights in a row.Time
Naturally, the northern lights only appear during nighttime. I remember setting of in the late evening, arriving at this viewpoint and only seconds later the beautiful aurora display began.Lighting
As it is al natural, there is not very much to share about this. An important point though, is the fact that it was full moon. The full moon makes the aurora appear a little less bright but it has the advantage that the foreground is lit up beautifully.Equipment
This was shot on a Sony A7R with an old, manual Canon FD 20mm f2.8. For the northern lights, you need a longer shutter speed and thus also a tripod. I use a 3 Legged Thing Brian. It is a lightweight travel tripod that is surprisingly sturdy for its build.Inspiration
I enjoy being in nature and being alone on the top of a mountain, just taking it all in. But I also enjoy sharing the beauty of these moments and the beauty of nature with other people. This is the main reason I carry my camera with me on these trips. But it also is a great memory for myself when I am back at home.Editing
I don't like a lot of post-processing. I prefer my images very natural. Of course I do some tweaking in the light, reduce noise and sharpen a little bit, but that is about it.In my camera bag
The equipment I usually have with me is the only equipment I have. A Sony A7Rii with the 24-70mm F4 lens, a LEE Big Stopper (10 stops), Lee Medium grad (0.6) and a 3 Legged Thing tripod. I just recently upgraded to this from the A7R. I chose the Sony Alpha series because of the weight and size. When backpacking you don't want to carry heavy gear when there are such amazing options as the A7Rii. It produces amazing image quality and because of the size and weight I notice I take it with me a lot more often then I did with my old and rahter heavy Canon 7DFeedback
The biggest cliche advice is very much true: just get out there, in nature. More specific for these types of images, it is very helpfull to scout the location during daylight to find a nice composition and foreground interest. This is especially true if you don't have a full moon, than it can get dangerous, exploring unknown regions in the dark. Also, don't be afraid to experiment. The northern lights are fleeding, but not instant. Try different shutter speeds and see what the effect on the aurora is.
