Location
This is a shot taken in Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary - Gloucester (MA), one of the 5 biggest whales sanctuaries in the world. Dark and rich waters attract huge numbers of marine mammals like minke whales, humpback whales and many other species for one of the greatest shows of Nature.Time
in late afternoon, approaching the sunset hoursLighting
The lighting was difficult to render with a huge storm approaching westward, only a diffused and dim sunlight was on the scene so I had to try some presets for these eventualities and hoping they could leed to a good result!Luckly the 500mm did a great job here!Equipment
This shot was taken with a Canon 7D mark I with a zoom 50-500mm Sigma APO DG at full extent mounted on a tripod with a Gymbal Head, the setup was of great help to take sharp and extremely clear pictures, even with low light!Inspiration
That was not the first time I did a whale watching session but that rainy day was really peculiar, almost alone on the deck and with this strange atmosphere, we met dozens of whales really busy to feed on the abundand krill in the waters. This shot represents what I really feel staring at this seasonal Nature show: wild & free!Editing
The post processing was mainly focused on gaining color and light back into the scene from an highly desaturated raw file, the focus was amazingly sharp that I had not edit it at all..In my camera bag
Usually I go with a backpack and a minimal equipment, but this time I could bring heavier equipments and work in the best way I could imagine for this session.Feedback
the 7D has an amazing framerate and is always a good idea to take as many shots as you can from a moving subject to be sure you can get at least a really good and steady shot. Using the 50-500 at full extent is not always the best (talking about sharpness) but sometimes is better get a step back and don't interfere with Nature and admire a genuine moment instead of a closeup ..
