Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Vienna in Austria - the place where I live.

Time

This photo was shot early in the morning - early enough for being first in the park and late enough to have a perfect light.

Lighting

The best light for such a photo in a forest scene is when the subject doesn't get direct light, but the background does - but it has still to be a soft light...so late afternoon or early morning are best. So you get this nice, colorful bokeh.

Equipment

I've used a handheld Canon 5d Mk III with a Canon 135/2 L for this shot.

Inspiration

On this morning I did several shots of squirrels with a longer lens and was satisfied with the resulsts, but I wanted something special with a different point of view. So I took my shorter but great Canon 135/2 L and positioned myself near a tree stump where the squirrels always came by and tried to get below eye level and waited for a squirrel to stop and stand up.I had to be very fast...and lucky.

Editing

There's not much post-processing in this shot. The bokeh is lens made - but you have to know which situations are suitable to get a nice bokeh. I've used some post processing in Photoshop to optimize contrast, did some tonal correction and increased the crispyness of the image.

In my camera bag

Canon 5d Mk III Canon 7D Canon 16-35/4 L IS Canon 50/1.4 Canon 70-200/4 L IS Canon 135/2 L Canon 400/2.8 L USM ii or OS Tamron 150-600 Tripod ND Filters, gradient filters, polarization filter

Feedback

If you're satisfied with your shots it's sometimes not enough - try something different like a different, more interesting point of view. But you should have an idea first so you can prepare yourself and the equipment.
