Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at a friend's wedding. I was helping with unrelated tasks but had taken my camera "just in case" I saw some good shots. This was a moment I'm glad I didn't miss.

Time

It was late in the afternoon when the little flower girl, who had arrived earlier on the bus, wanted to show it to me while it was empty. I'm sure she thought it belonged to her. The bright sunshine was filtered by the roof of the bus but enough light came through the windows to make it a workable shot.

Lighting

The lighting was purely opportunistic as there was no stopping the flower girl, she was running around so fast.

Equipment

I had - my then - second camera a D300s Nikon and 14 - 14mm lens. The lens is one I used mainly for landscape but because I wasn't the main shooter at the wedding I was trying some different types of shots.

Inspiration

My inspiration was the pure joy the small girl was expressing. the best I could hope for in the seconds I had was to capture some of this joy.

Editing

My post-processing involved the usual LIghtroom exposure and temperature checks. I cropped a lot as the girl was lost in the very big frame but I still left a lot of context in the photo. I then ran it through a grunge type of filter on Color Efex Pro4. Technically the shot isn't perfect but the emotion is there and I was glad I was ready with my camera at hand.

In my camera bag

I used to have a big equipment bag but increasingly I rely on my 50mm lens with a D700 Nikon. This is my go-to for candid photography and it's relatively easy to carry. My other lenses are the 14 - 24mm, 75mm - 250mm and my backup camera D300s.

Feedback

My main advice - as usual - is to carry a camera. Post-processing software is so amazing these days you can do almost anything if you just get the shot! Having said that, I still dislike iPhone photography as I hate working with a screen when composing shots. A viewfinder rocks!
