Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo whilst on holiday in Vancouver, along Canada Place. My daughter and I decided to go on a photo "mission" this particular evening and it turned into a glorious sunset.

Time

We headed out around 3pm and walked around the area for hours just taking shots, capturing the light as well as the people on the streets.

Lighting

I was enchanted by all the reflections on the shiny surfaces and kept an eye out for the golden glow of the early on the cool metal and glass surfaces of the buildings.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D700, 70-200mm f2.8 lens, at 70mm. Available light only.

Inspiration

This is the sight that greeted me early on in our walk. I loved the contrast between the fluid golden light being reflected and the starkness of the building. Also the size of the building and the relative, almost ant-like, figures walking at its base.

Editing

I used Lightroom and some filters to emphasize the cool and the warmth in the image.

In my camera bag

When I travel I always carry my D700 and sometimes a couple of lenses (depending on what I plan to shoot) and other times I challenge myself to use only one lens and work with what I have at the time. I miss some shots but usually I come away with some satisfying results. I often use a tripod but am just as happy using high iso settings as the D700 handles low light and high iso very well.

Feedback

If you want great light shoot before 10 am and after 3 pm - well that's what I was taught and as a general rule it works well. But I often find strong midday sun can provide interesting contrasts. Trust your instincts and if something appeals photograph it using various angles etc so you can get home and "find" what it was that drew your attention - it's not always immediately apparent but once found it can be emphasized during processing.
