On my first trip to Island Lake near Silverton, Colorado, I decided to set my alarm for 1:30 AM to hunt for some night photos nearby after a grueling backpack up to 12,400 ft. The moon was almost full, so I had to wait until 3:00 before the Milky Way became visible. I hiked around the Island Lake area in the dark and stumbled upon this small shallow lake with a fantastic view of Fuller Peak, Vermillion, and Golden Horn (the mountains at lower center). I knew that it would be a special composition with the Milky Way ascending directly above those magnificent peaks all paired with a wonderful reflection from the lake. Sleep is overrated, am I right?
