Using an astro-tracker and a very long exposure, I was able to capture the Milky Way in glorious detail within the Bisti Badlands of New Mexico. These ancient hoodoos spoke to me deeply, and the dome of rock in the distance made for an inviting subject to center above the hoodoos below the Milky Way core.

Location
This is a composite image (two photos from two different places and times) that I'm actually not super proud of. Since creating this image I have had "an awakening" by which I believe that composite images such as this are not good for the long-term health of landscape photography. The milky way here was taken in Utah and the foreground elements were taken at Bisti Badlands.Time
Late afternoon for the foreground and 1 AM for the Milky Way.Lighting
It is a blend of two exposures taken at two different locations and times.Equipment
This was shot on the Sony A7RII camera and the Nikon 14-24 lens.Inspiration
At the time, I felt like the scene would benefit from an interesting background layer w/ the Milky Way, so combined the images into one. In retrospect, the foreground was strong enough as-is!Editing
Quite a lot! See above. In my camera bag

I would not recommend people create unrealistic composites such as this. I have written quite a long essay on the topic here: http://www.mattpaynephotography.com/blog/2018/2/Pretty-Little-Lies
