Once found throughout much of the Middle East and parts of the Near East Asiatic lion numbers plummeted during the colonial era. Today they exist in the wild only in and around the Gir Forest in southern Gujarat State in India where their numbers are increasing. This is Govinda, one of the lions I occasionally encountered during a three year field study of the lion population in the late 1960s.
