"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free" is a statement often associated with America's immigration policy and is symbolized in its statue of liberty. In an effort to discourage immigrants from coming in 2017 the Trump administration began a program of separating migrant children from parents who crossed the southern border fleeing violence in Central America and seeking asylum in the US. Over 5000 children were taken away and put into holding facilities while many of their parents were deported back to their home countries. Public outrage brought this practice to a halt before the Biden administration came into power. Under the new administration efforts have been made to reunite the parents with their children, but it has been frustrated by the failure of the previous administration's to keep accurate records as to the whereabouts of many of those involved. It is estimated that over a thousand children still remain separated from their parents.

Congratulations, you were chosen the winner in my New York Landmarks Photo Challenge. There was more than one reason for that. Not just a well taken shot but the photo is also a great comment on the situation at the time. Too bad all those children have not been returned yet.
