Location
This is taken at Multnomah Falls which lies 35 miles east of Portland, Oregon on I-84. Easily one of the most visited falls in all of the United States due to it's accessibility. Be prepared to wait patiently as the bridge is often covered with people but I was lucky that it was closed at that time for some reconstruction. The footbridge was built in 1914 by Simon Benson, one of the builders of the old Columbia highway and it is often subject to falling rock.Time
This was taken during the later part of the day, perhaps 4:00 pm time frame during the summer. I stop every time I go through that area to study the effects of the different parts of the day that plays on the falls. All my other photos do not contain light but thought perhaps the falls might catch some rays at some point.Lighting
These falls rarely see alot of sunshine due to it's location in the mountains so I waited a bit in hopes of capturing light from different sources. While light can distract, I thought it lent beauty to the features surrounding the falls. The falls face the north so the sun passes slightly behind the falls casting shadows.Equipment
I used a Canon Rebel T5i with a 28-120mm lens. Tripod is absolutely necessary since the speed was slowed. I also used a neutral density as well.Inspiration
I love waterfalls and these are amongst the most beautiful in the USA. I love the footbridge with the old architecture design to it and I wanted to capture it with light.Editing
I enhanced the vibrance just a bit in post processing to bring out the greenery a bit more. I also added a little sharpening but not very much as I do not have the knowledge within PS to isolate some areas and not touch other areas. I did not want to mess with the soft lines in the water. In my camera bag
My no. 1 thing is that I have a backpack camera bag. This allows me to keep my hands free as I go down into ravines or areas that do not need to be encumbered. I have three lens that I take. They are all Canons. One is a Prime 80mm fixed lens. I like this lens since it goes down to 1.4 f/stop. One is a 70-300mm in case I cannot get close to what I am photographing and the third is my go-to 18mm-135mm lens. Between those lens, I'm normally capable of photographing anything. Of course, my camera body. I have various filters including a variable neutral density filter, an enhancement filter, polarizing and UV filters. I also carry fully charged spare batteries for the camera. My tripod attaches to the bag. Other things I carry is a whistle, compass, emergency poncho and blanket and rain proof matches.Feedback
As many people who visit these falls, be prepared to be patient and wait. Once I can get to the spot I want, then I often have to wait longer for people to move off the bridge so I could be there as much as an hour or two. Keep in mind if you are traveling with someone, they may not want to wait that long. There are other waterfalls in the immediate area but not as impressive as this one.
