A second "Country Bum" shot. More of a outtake, as my son was laughing at me as I was trying to imiate what I wanted him to do. Lighting was from both the setting sun, as well as dual flashes in a 28" softbox. Taken with the Fuji XT-1 and 56mm f-1.2 lens.

Children can be challenging during a photo shoot but it is all worth it because with comes laughs, experience and great memories. You captured it all! Nice work!

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in my back yard at the outskirts of a small wooded area. I had a temperature of 104.7 at the time this photo was being shot, but I didn't let a little thing like that stop me. ;)

Time

This was shot towards the evening. The sun was getting split between camera left, and peeking through the trees and foliage.

Lighting

28" softbox with 2 Speedlights, each set to 1/8 power, camera right. Setting sunlight camera left.

Equipment

Fuji XT-1 with the Fuji XF 56mm f/1.2 lens. Camera mounted on tripod. Phottix multi-boom with 2 mounted Yongnuo speedlights inside of a 28" soft box on a light stand. Camera settings were ISO 200, 1/180 shutter speed.

Inspiration

My backyard literally looks like the country. Although I live in a subdivision, a small forest of sorts borders it. My son, while I was doing some Spring cleaning, found an old antique harmonica that someone gave me when I was about his age. He was thrilled with the sounds it made. Combine that with his love of being outside, and "Country Bum" was born. A funny side note: I was ill with a temperature of 104.7 (yes, you read that right, 104.7). Perhaps it was part delirium and part muse, but that was the day I decided I wanted to do this shoot.

Editing

I didn't do a lot of post-processing with this photo. This was processed in Lightroom with a little color correction, some sharpening, and a bit of saturation adjustments.

In my camera bag

My bag goes everywhere with me. It's a ZYLC vintage brown leather messenger bag. Nowadays Inside you will find my XT-1, usually with my 35mm lens attached. I also keep my 23mm, 56mm, and 90mm lenses in the compartment next to my camera. There is also a speedlight, a light meter, a rogue flash bender, extra batteries, memory cards, some lens cloths, and an iPad mini.

Feedback

Just get out there and shoot. The more you practice, the more you develop (pun intended) as a photographer. As far as portraits of children, look at the world through their eyes, see the wonder and awe, and try to replicate that magic through your photography. Don't force children to pose or look a certain way. Be patient. That perfect shot will come. Catch them off guard. Capture them being kids.
