There's a lot going on in that image. I like the white curd-ly stuff on the right side of the white. The lashes above the white look interesting.

I took the eye portion of the photo in my home DIY "studio". The portion that is in my pupil is a night shot of Casa Lunita in the Sian Ka'an, south of Tulum, Mexico.Time
My eyeball macro shot was taken in the daytime, indoors so the time of day didnt play a part in the eyeball. The beach scene in the pupil was taken around 10pm.Lighting
For lighting on my eye, I used a flash to get the most detail out of my iris. I wanted that part to really stand out.Equipment
I definitely used a tripod for this with my remote. At that time I had a d5200 with the swiveling viewfinder and my 105mm macro. I was able to put my eye basically into the lens and see the viewfinder with my other eye.. took a few times but I got it. The remote and swiveling screen really helped for this eyeball shot.Inspiration
I wanted to create a photo that portrayed my passion/obsession for the beach.. maybe show you what I was seeing, feeling, and longing for.. I love the beaches in the Sian Ka'an. I guess, I was going for a visual feeling more than anything. That feeling of being stressed from the daily grind of the city, wanting nothing more than to leave it all behind to sit under a palm tree with a slushy beverage, watching waves break. Palm trees in my sights.Editing
Yes..I really enhanced the iris to make it stand out. As well I wanted to practice my artistic photo manipulation abilities in Photoshop by making the eyeball look teared up and stressed almost..with the palm trees in my pupil as somewhat of a reflection of what I wanted to see or was seeing. Photo manipulation is definitely an artform now a days. I have a lot of respect for those of you who create amazing photo manipulation type images. Its an exciting area to me, there are no limits to what you can do or what you can create. You can bring your dreams to life!In my camera bag
Tripod.. always.. never go anywhere without it. Also sb800 speedlight is always in my bag. Along with my trusty 50mm f1.8, you'll find a 24-85mm and 70-300mm. I also always have filters with me. CPL, variable ND, UV. And as always an extra battery!Feedback
Iris photos can be a lot of fun. Ive found that using a cpl will help to reduce glare and show more details in the iris. Extension tubes could get you a little closer, but I didnt want such a shallow DOF. I wanted to get everything in focus, as best as I could. It is a lot easier to take ophotos of other people's eyeballs as opposed to your own. Getting a little help with this shot would be recommended. It would be very difficult to replicate with my d610, which doesnt have the swiveling lcd. (That is such a handy feature of the d5200, loved it for many reasons). Hope this helps.. I am by no means the resident expert.. but thats how I was able to create this image.
