Location
Because this photo was a composite, there were several different places they were taken. The image of the girl herself was on the beach with the wind in her hair. The image of the boat was taken during a family trip to Ocracoke in the Outerbanks off of North Carolina. Lastly the sky and water images were taken at the Aquarium in Charleston, South Carolina.Time
We had gone to the beach one early afternoon just before a storm was rolling in so the lighting was overcast and perfect.Lighting
I love the look of natural light so with the overcast sky it acted like a giant diffuser.Equipment
This was shot with a Nikon 7000 with the 70-200mm 2.8 lens.Inspiration
I had just bought this long flowy chiffon dress/skirt and had planned on using it at a beach setting. I new there would be a light to moderate wind at the beach which would give movement to the dress and hair. The idea with the boat and underwater scene didn't come to me until I was sitting in front of my computer screen editing the photos. I loved the pose and the emotion I captured of the girl but wanted more drama in the scene so decided to keep the water aspect but add it back in a different way.Editing
This is a composite of 5-6 images so yes there is a lot of post processing which was all done in Photoshop Elements. It includes basic photo editing as well as layers, textures, filters and painting of light. In my camera bag
I like to keep my bag as light as possible so I usually plan on bringing two lenses with me to a shoot. I carry my Nikon 7000 camera along with my 50mm and 70-200mm lenses majority of the time.Feedback
My advice would be to decide what story or emotion you are trying to capture first. Then sit down and make a list of words around that idea. You'd be surprised how the image starts to come to life before you know it. Once you have a firm idea of the image in your head it's time to start piecing images together in Photoshop. But don't be surprised if when you start piecing things together that your idea changes. Some of my best images have come from ideas that just didn't come together just right. For example: this image was originally suppose to be a girl standing off the front of a ship like in the movie Titanic. But the creative process has a way of changing your course - so just go with it.
