Location
The photo was taken in Lost Eden Canyon (a most appropriate name if there ever was one) on Lake Powell in southeastern Utah. I was teaching a college science class and these were the kayaks of the students taking the course. We had reached the end of our paddle (obviously) and were leaving to explore the upper reaches of the canyon.Time
This was late morning, as I recall, but in a canyon this narrow and deep, where sunlight scarcely reaches, time of day doesn't matter much.Lighting
The canyon, due to it's depth and narrowness, was quite dark.Equipment
Not wanting to risk my better equipment in a kayak, I was carrying a Sony point-and-shoot. It's actually capable of taking very nice photos.Inspiration
I took the photo because I loved the multi-colored scene of identically shaped kayaks wedged into the final point of the lake in the canyon.Editing
No real post-processing for this one other than minor adjustments of brightness and contrast. In my camera bag
Currently, I generally carry a Nikon D800E, most often with a Nikon 14-24 lens, or, when weight and space are an issue, either a Canon EOS M or Sony NEX 6 mirrorless camera.Feedback
This photo is an example of the importance of taking your camera along on your travels. The photo is all about serendipity - simply having a camera in hand when an unexpected, interesting photo opportunity presented itself.
