Location
The photo was taken at the Racetrack Playa, a remote area in Death Valley National Park. This is one of the strangest places on the planet and well worth the long, rough drive to reach it.Time
I took the photo around mid-morning. This wouldn't be my first choice, but the lighting still highlighted the geometric mud cracks very well.Lighting
My primary concern regarding lighting was to emphasize the mud cracks in the scene.Equipment
The photo was shot on Fujichrome film with a Canon FTb camera and a 28mm Canon FD lens.Inspiration
The Racetrack Playa resembles an alien world. The laser-flat playa with its geometric mud crack patterns is just mesmerizing. This place just demands to be photographed.Editing
The transparency was scanned and converted to black and white in PhotoShop. Other than adjusting contrast levels a bit, no other post-processing was needed. In my camera bag
These days I am using a Nikon Z7 as my main camera, along with a 24-70mm f/4 and a 14-30mm lens.Feedback
Plan to spend some time waiting for the right lighting and experiment with a variety of scenes and orientations. It would be hard in this magical place not to come away with some excellent photographs!
