Location
This photograph was taken in the extensive sunflower fields of the Canadian province of Manitoba in August of 1982.Time
The photo was taken at midday.Lighting
It was overcast when I took the photo, which helped me avoid the extremes of dark shadows and too bright highlights that I likely would have had on a sunny day.Equipment
The photograph was taken on 35mm transparency film (Kodachrome 64 as I recall) with a Canon 28mm f/2.8 lens mounted on a Canon FTb camera. This was the only camera I owned in 1982, when the photo was taken.Inspiration
The combination of seemingly endless fields of sunflowers, coupled with the fact that the flower heads are all pointed in the same direction, creates a stunning display. It's the kind of striking scene that no photographer can resist!Editing
The original 35mm transparency was scanned and the image file was adjusted slightly for contrast in PhotoShop. In my camera bag
I made the leap to digital photography in 2005, so my dear old Canon FTb now sits on my shelf as a beloved decoration. I currently use several cameras, a Nikon D800E when image quality is my top concern. However, when weight is an issue, I generally will opt for a mirrorless camera, either my Canon EOS-m or my Sony A6000.Feedback
One of the most appealing aspects of this photo in my opinion is the effect of the camera position on perspective. I tried to hold the camera as high as possible to accentuate the vastness of the field of flowers.
