Behind The Lens
Location
i captured this during a Japanese-Cambodian modern dance experimentation residence a couple of years ago in Phnom PenhTime
it was an indoor show evening timeLighting
however it is a B&W picture the show was about modern choreography with light painting as well directly on the performers, making the shooting a bit challengingEquipment
just a canon 5D II with a fix 50 mm lens , no flash no tripod , just me pretty study looking for the right captureInspiration
i love modern dance and capturing singular and unusual movements, it renders the beauty of human body and sometimes his soul when the capture is rightEditing
almost none, just black&white process on the raw shoot and a bit of play with the contrastIn my camera bag
nowadays, as i shoot a lot of behind the scenes for the cinema or tv shows, i usually carry 2 bodies: canon 5D III with a 16/35 and a 70/300 , in case of need a spar 85 mm for specific portraits.Feedback
finding the right show , learn a bit about the performers background, trying to see on screen formers performances to understand the mood and the type of light ( to prepare your equipment) find yourself the best spot for the shooting and a lot of patience. A good way also if you are close to the artist team is to shoot during the final rehearsal before the public performance, like that you can find your way without the public trouble.
