Very nice job of isolating the egret against a dark background.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Venus Rookery in Venus Florida. This is a beautiful place in the middle of Venus Fla and home to many species of nesting birds.

Time

I took this shot mid morning, around 9:30am on what turned out to be a very bright sunny day.

Lighting

Lighting was harsh but I managed to catch decent light for long enough to get this image.

Equipment

When I took this shot I was still shooting with a Canon 10D, using a 600mm ISL lens, on a tripod, with a release. The bird was about 150 yards across a lake.

Inspiration

In the bird world the males are the more attractive of the species. I was inspired by his display of the mating plummage and the over all appeal of the setting.

Editing

I don't recall doing anything post processing other than slight sharpening.

In my camera bag

I carry now days a Canon 5D, a 50D, 100-400 ISL Canon Lens, 17-40 L Canon Lens, 50mm 1.4 Canon, 28-135 IS Canon, a 430 EX and 530 EX Canon Flash, a Canon Cable release, circular polarizing filters and a set of diffusers.

Feedback

Patience, lighting, and the right lens choice make more difference than a camera body in my opinion. I believe when shooting wildlife if you study how they react, they are not much different than people and have habits that you can wait for just the right moment to shoot. Always use a tripod when possible and wait for the subject to do something special.
