Behind The Lens

Location

Every spring there is a big gathering of cranes at Hornborgarsjön between Vänern and Vättern near Skara. There can be up to 20.000 cranes. It is an overwhelming sight when they all gather to feed.

Time

Early in the morning at sun rise all cranes comes to the southern part of the lake to feed. When we where there it had been snowing in the night so we had to drive carefully to get there. We therefore missed the actual in flight of the cranes. They sleep out on the shores of the lake.

Lighting

It was a cold snowy morning with no sunlight. I had to do some post processing to get some contrast an color in to the picture.

Equipment

I have my Panasonic Lumix DMC-G80 and my Lumix G-Vario 100-300 mounted. I did not set up my tripod since it was so cold, snowy and windy. You just wanted to get some pictures and return into a warm car. Exposure was 1/500 sec, with f/5.6 and ISO 800. Focal length at maximum 300 mm, equivalent of 650 mm.

Inspiration

There is a lot of crane dancing pictures around and I wanted to make my one. The dream was to have a sun rise in the background and just to cranes dancing. Instead I got snow, cloud and a crowed of cranes. However, I managed to cut out these two with a referee from the crowd.

Editing

It toke some work to get this picture. I had something like 2.000 pictures to go through. I was looking for some dancing but it was hard to find. This is a very small part of a larger picture and the only one where the two dancing birds is fairly on there one. Then with the poor light I had to increase the exposure, add contrast and clarity. There is also some vignette added to center the attention.

In my camera bag

I only have one camera my Lumix DMC-G80. In addition the that I always carry around my set of Lumix Vario lenses. 100-300 mm, 45-150 mm and 12-60 mm. I recently also bought a used Olympus 9-18 mm.

Feedback

Try to find a day with somewhat better weather. If you want a more singled out photo. Then maybe you should come earlier in the season when there is a bit more less of cranes. You also need to get up early, the cranes comes flying just before sun rise.
