Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Alum Spring Park in Fredericksburg, Virginia. It's one of my favorite photo session locations in Fredericksburg; it's almost unbelievable that this gorgeous natural spot is in the middle of all the hustle & bustle of Northern Virginia.

Time

This was taken at the very beginning of sunset golden hour. With the trees and hills of this location, I have to time sessions just right to get that gorgeous backlight before it disappears.

Lighting

This was actually taken using only natural light! For me, being able to use a location with gorgeous light is always a treat because I can focus so much more on the fun of the session.

Equipment

This was shot with a Nikon D750 and a Nikkor 85mm 1.8 lens. I shoot wide open to really get that nice shallow depth of field and make my subjects POP!

Inspiration

This was not the first time I had this amazing family in front of my camera; 6 years before this I took a similar photo of her older brother doing the exact same thing with Dad and we really wanted to have this shot as a nod back to their earlier session with me.

Editing

I did enhance the fall colors a touch, I'm a New England girl so I'm a sucker for some fall colors!

In my camera bag

In addition to my Nikon D750 and Nikkor 85mm, I also keep Nikkor 35 mm & 50 mm lenses on hand. I also generally have a Nikon SB7000 with a magsphere just in case, but the lighting this day didn't need to put them to work.

Feedback

Back button focus & a fast shutter finger will do really well for these kinds of images. Definitely get Dad in place and have him throw straight up so you can keep everyone in focus with that shallow depth of field.
