This photo of my niece was taken at Fort Smallword Park in Pasadena, Maryland. We went here because of the open field next to the river and I knew the light would be glorious.Time
This was taken during sunset golden hour during the fall. I love photographing silhouettes during golden hour, the colors are so rich!Lighting
This is 100% natural light. I exposed for the sky to get the silhouette and I love that I still have a little detail in her dress since it has such a fun pattern!Equipment
Nikon D750 with my Nikkor 85mm 1.8 and a smile! I love when I can get something like this that is taken simply using basic camera gear and my photographic skill set.Inspiration
My niece was loving twirling around in her dress. I remembered as a little girl how much I always loved twirling in my princess dresses and wanted to be able to capture an image of that joyful childhood moment for my niece to have forever.Editing
Minimal post processing, some slight sharpening and adjust contrast & colors to really make the silhouette POP!In my camera bag
I typically carry my D750, 50mm, and 85mm primes. I also have my SB500 and Parapop for when I want to do something a bit more complicated with lighting but I didn't use them for this image.Feedback
When you are photographing a moving child, you definitely want a high shutter speed to FREEZE the motion. With silhouettes, meter the sky for your exposure (you have to be shooting in manual!) and try to put the sun behind the subject if possible.
