Behind The Lens

Location

I am the Photographer at The Summit Bechtel Reserve for the Boy Scouts of America. It is in the Heart of West Virginia! There is always so much to shoot from the perspective of a photographer. So often we walk right by the coolest things to capture with our camera's

Time

It was early in the morning, West Virginia very often will be foggy in the morning and the dew drops cling to everything making for awesome opportunities for great shots.

Lighting

It was the Golden Hour that morning, and the fog had really done its work on the plants. I just walk along and played with the different things I found along the way,

Equipment

I have a Tokina 100mm f/2.8 AT-X M100 AF Pro D lens I use for macro, it is one of my favorite lenses! It was the perfect time of day for just using the natural light.

Inspiration

I really have come to love macro photography! Its the gift that keeps on giving really! When I don't know what to go and shoot on any given day, I will put on the Macro lens and just slowing walk the edges of my regular paths. It has helped me notice small details we all to often walk right past.

Editing

Nothing special really. I have kind of a process for editing raw images in photoshop. I use Lightroom for file management, I know it does more but I guess I am a creature of habit and use photoshop because its what I am used too. I usually will shadows and highlights and sharpness and noise. This one I didn't have to play with much.

In my camera bag

I carry a Nikon D500, and 2 D7200 all with battery grips. Tamron SP AF 10-24mm F/3.5-4.5 Di II LD, Tamron SP 24-70mm f/2.8 Di VC USD, Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 DI USD, Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD, Tokina 100mm f/2.8 AT-X M100 AF Pro D, Nikon 50mm f/1.8G AF-S NIKKOR Lens, Nikon 180mm f/2.8D ED-IF AF NIKKOR. I also carry 8 100X150 ND filters for Landscapes.

Feedback

The composition is just as important in the small world as the big world. So try to keep that in mind! Also walk slowly and look at everything. It will start to condition you to look at details. Macro photography is about capturing things that most people just overlook. The biggest tip I could give anyone is pre-visualize, and shoot, shoot, shoot. Also only be happy with the home run, and remember feedback is a gift, the more critical feedback you can get the more you learn. Never be satisfied with your photography, always reach for more!
