Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Great Stables of the Domain de Chantilly in France, where in addition to housing really beautiful horses and other equine animals, equestrian shows and other performances are held. In this Place there is also a beautiful Museum which presents the relationship between men and horses since the beginning of civilization.

Time

The photo was taken at noon of a sunny, bright day.

Lighting

Unfortunately from the point of view of photography, the light inside the stables was a bit poor and I have to adjust the exposure to compensate this. Obviously I did not use the flash, it could have disturbed the horses, and additionally I normally try to not use it.

Equipment

To take this photo I used my Canon 7D with the 28-135 mm 1:3.5-5.6 EF IS zoom lens. Neither flash nor tripod were used. I still feel that I have a good pulse and that even using 1/40 s speed I am be able to take the photo without any support of the camera.In any case I do not think the people from the stables would have allow me to use a tripod.

Inspiration

I love horses. To find several beautiful animals in only one place was very exciting for me, I took the camera from the bag and starting shooting. Not all the photos were good in my opinion but anyway I took many photos from different angles trying to not disturb the horses and using the reduced space to focus and frame the animals.

Editing

I did not do a lot of post processing with this one. I use Adobe Photoshop to erase some disturbing objects in the background and convert the original photo into black and white. I tried to pop out the dark fur of the horse contrasting with the brown dark wood of the walls and at the same time tried to bring out the details in the face of the animal, including the hair of his chin and on top of its head, while keeping the bright of its eyes which by the way they impressed me a lot.

In my camera bag

In my camera bag I have a Canon 7D that is soon to be 10 years old. I have the lens that was used for this photo the 28-135 mm 1:3.5-5.6 EF IS lens, I also have in my bag a 18-55 mm 1:3.5-5.6 IS II lens and a 55-250 mm 1:4-5.6 IS EF-S., Canon Remote Control, extra batteries, CF cards, extension tubes and an adapter for the 28-135 mm lens to invert it and use it as a macro lens that I am still trying to dominate. I have several tripods, one monopod and many filters, which I rarely take with me.

Feedback

My advice for photos like this is: follow what yo like and enjoy taking photos of it. As said above I love horses wherever I see one or more, I tried to take its or their photo. In this particular occasion two of my passions were united in one place, horses and my photography. So my advice would be: "Look for the moment, be prepared for it. Take your camera wherever you go, ask for permission only if you need to and whatever the light is shoot it and keep shooting".
