A shadow is a space where light from a light source is blocked by an opaque object If it’s a semi-translucent object the effects are more transient or ethereal. Either way, it occupies all of the three-dimensional volume behind an object with light in front of it. The cross section of a shadow is a two-dimensional silhouette, or reverse projection of the object blocking the light.
Culturally, mankind has been programed to either revere, fear, shun, or embrace “shadows” of our surroundings or the deep inner workings of ourselves and thusly “shadows” illicit a myriad of reactions from all individuals. Several physiological and psychological conditions can account for reported experiences of shadowy shapes seeming alive.
A number of religions, legends, and belief systems describe shadowy spiritual beings or supernatural entities such as shades of the underworld, and various shadowy creatures have long been a staple of folklore and ghost stories. An unattended shadow or shade was thought by some cultures to be similar to that of a ghost. Sciophobia, or sciaphobia, is the fear of shadows.
