Behind The Lens
Location
I took this photo at my home in one of the bedrooms.Time
It was mid afternoon when the light is indirect but still illuminates the room well.Lighting
There is a window directly in front of me with indirect light and the walls are painted a grey color so they didn't reflect much.Equipment
I shot this with a Canon 6D, Canon 50mm 1.4, and a tripod.Inspiration
My kiddos were playing on the bed and I thought the light looked so lovely. It had been a while since I was in a photo with them so we played a game where I set the timer and the older two got to take turns pushing the button and running back. They thought it was so fun. The plan was to have them all looking but after many attempts the little one got hungry and the oldest one got bored. So I nursed the baby and she lied down like that. The thing I love most about this image is that I didn't pose anybody. When the middle one ran back from pushing the button he posed himself like that and was watching intently for the blinking light.Editing
I used a BW action by My Four Hens Photography.In my camera bag
My main body is a Canon 6D and my backup is a 5D Classic. I shoot with a 50mm 1.4, 35mm Sigma Art 1.4, and a Canon 85 1.8. My newest addition is a Petzval 85mm. For white balance I keep an Expo Disk and that's about all that's in my bag.Feedback
To achieve an image like this a whole lot of luck is involved. Small children loose interest quickly and don't always follow direction well. :) And because this was a self portrait it posed the greater challenge of making sure everyone was in focus and in the frame and hopefully looking at the camera. I'd suggest a moderate aperture (this was shot at f4) and a shutter speed no slower than 250. I made a game of it which helped a lot so the kids stayed engaged and interested.
