If you're going to hike to this location, it's a waste to leave after dark without getting nighttime shots.
This was taken from Yerba Buena Island. The skyline is San Francisco. I'd tried to take skyline photos of the city a number of times, but was always foiled by fog. This night shaped up really nicely, as the low-lying clouds stayed behind the city and even caught the light from below.
This panorama is actually 2'x6'. This version really doesn't do it much justice. It's among the best shots I've taken yet.

Thanks, this is the third time I've landed this photo in the finals of a contest. Third time's the charm, right?

Fantastic perspective. Really like the slight curve in the bridge. Beautiful colour and detail. Congratulations.

Tried to make a comment via my phone and screwed it all up and had to delete it. Anyway saw your comment on my shot making the finals along with yours. Wish I could leave you another award and like but can't even though you deserve it. 14 times a Finalist and once a Runner Up, this needs to win this time and I hope you do even though I am in the running also. Cheers.

Location
I took this photo on the southwest side of Yerba Buena island(between San Francisco and Oakland). A friend and I hiked down the hill next to the bridge to find an outcropping on the edge of a dropoff large enough to set up my tripod.Time
We arrived and set up at about 7pm, and I took many different passes as the day expired, watching the changing lighting conditions as the sun set. The bridge lights came on around 9pm, and this panorama was taken around 9:15 or so.Lighting
Since I had many passes at the panorama, I had the opportunity to choose which one had the best light. I wanted some light in the sky and some reflected light in the water. Also, since each frame was a 1.5 second exposure, I had to time the shots with the blinking of the red lights on top of the bridge.Equipment
Just camera and tripod (Nikon D3200 with a Sigma DG HSM 18-250mm, and Manfrotto MK293, respectively). I triggered the shutter by hand with a 2 second delay.Inspiration
This is going to sound stupid, but on the flight from Florida to California I was looking at the Sky Mall magazine which had large panoramic prints for sale. One was of the Bay Bridge, and I thought, "That's nice, why don't I find that spot and take that picture myself?" I didn't find the spot; I found my own spot. And I came away with a great image.Editing
This image is 7 vertical frames stitched together in Photoshop. I did the usual curves adjustments to give a dynamic nature to the sky, and I adjusted vibrancy and clarity as well. When I process my photos, I try to make sure that the end result is natural and believable. In my camera bag
Just the basics - I travel light and fast. Nikon D3200, Sigma 18-250mm lens, Nikon Speedlight, and IR remote, a few macro extension tubes, a 35mm prime and my tripod.Feedback
If you want to capture an image like this one, scout your location and get there early. This single shoot produced about 40 panoramas, all at different times of day with different lighting. I picked my favorite two and posted them, but everyone is different. When shooting a multi-frame panorama, check each shot afterwards and make sure it's clear - there's nothing worse than getting the image you wanted with a fuzzy section in the middle!
