Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my studio on Santa Clara, CA. It was part of a series I was doing on bodyscapes and decided to do something non-traditional by painting the models.

Time

We started body painting the models at 10am, it took 7 hours to paint them all. The actual photography session lasted 3 hours so it was a long day.

Lighting

The lighting was a from a single 5' diameter round softbox suspended directly over the camera and aimed slightly the models.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 5DmkII using a 24-105 f/4L lens at 28mm. The lighting was done with an Einstein strobe.

Inspiration

I had just completed and published a body of work called Multiscapes that were bodyscapes with up to 5 models and I was trying to determine where to go with the project. I was doing a shoot with the world class body painter Trina Merry and her business card consisted of 6 hands painted in rainbow colors stacked on top of each other. I realized right away that models painted in the colors of the rainbow would make for interesting bodyscape shots.

Editing

There was very little post-processing done on these images. In Photoshop I darkened the background to make it pure black and touched up a few small spots where the paint and rubbed off.

In my camera bag

Besides my Canon 5DmkII, I always have a 24-70mm f/2.8L and a 70-200mm f/2.8L when doing model shoots. I often carry other lenses as well, a 50mm f/1.4, 17-40mm f/4, and a 24-105mm f/4L. I also have 5-7 Pocket wizards and a Sekonic L-358 Light Meter

Feedback

The preparation and planning is the hardest part for a shoot like this. Arranging for 7 models, the body painter and an assistant was a scheduling challenge. The day of the shoot is long because of the amount of time it take s to paint all the models, so I a full craft services table setup and kept the models fed and happy. A few Mirmosas help as well.
