When an image impacts a - "not so" simple WOW... When it sends chills, causes you to stare, and invoke one's mind to stir emotions - you've nailed it! And you have without doubt done that! Well done.

Behind The Lens

Location

Panther Beach in Santa Cruz, CA

Time

6pm

Lighting

This was photo was done with natural light during the golden hour just before sunset

Equipment

Canon 5DmkII with a 70-200mm f/2.8L lens at 80mm

Inspiration

This was part of a series of photos that I was working on that tried to tell a story about life events and how people may or may not cope with these events. The concept originated with thinking about how people don't always cope well to the birth of a child, and led in to postpartum depression and a mother who just can't take it anymore.

Editing

I did a fair amount of post-processing on this image. I didn't like the position of the model in the water so I moved her to the right and had to move the footprints in the sand as well. The sky was not very dramatic so I added another sky into the scene. I used Photoshop and Nik Color Efex Pro to do the post-processing.

In my camera bag

Canon 5DmkII, Canon 17-40mm F/4L, Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L, Canon 24-105mm f/4L, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L, Canon 580 strobe, 4 pocket wizards, intervalometer, CamRanger, lots of memory cards, batteries, and business cards.

Feedback

I spent a lot of time planning this image, pre-visualizing the final image and making numerous sketches and storyboards. To make a image like this you need to refine the concept and figure out all of the elements that are going into the final image. Not just because you need to carry the right props down to the beach but because it makes the shoot go very quickly and you can know after clicking the shutter that you have THE image because you have already visualized the final photo.
