Location
This photo was taken at Pismo Beach, CATime
Sunset in October, around 6:30pmLighting
There was a large fog bank out over the ocean that I thought was going to block the sunset, luckily the sky turned golden just before the sun went behind the fog bank.Equipment
I used a Canon 5DmkII with 70-200mm f/2.8L IS lensInspiration
The plan was to do silhouettes against the setting sun. The model was a yoga student who's mother was her instructor. Mom was standing next to me and yelling out instructions to her daughter. I asked for poses with a lot of angles and separation between the arms and legs as I knew that would make the best silhouettes.Editing
I used Lightroom to increase contrast and vibrance to make the yellows in the sky really pop. I also drop the black levels to add even more contrast. In my camera bag
Canon 5DmkII, 17-40mm f/4, 24-70mm f/2.8L, 24-105mm f/4L, 70-200mm f/2.8L, shutter release, polarizing filter, ND filters, and lots of batteries and CF cards.Feedback
The key to good silhouettes is good backlighting, the sun at sunrise or sunset is best and clouds are going to add interest and drama. You want to be able to clearly identify the subject, so that means arms and legs away from the body, otherwise they look like a featureless blob. You want a recognizable shape. In post-processing don't be afraid to using the black slider to make the subject black. You want to remove any detail from the subject. If the background gets too dark then compensate by increasing the exposure until you get a nice balance of black foreground/subject, and bright background.
