Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Montell, Texas. The property is situated in a rural area next to the Nueces River.

Time

It was midday under a dreary winter sky.

Lighting

Natural lighting, mostly over-the-top glare due to the humidity and cloud cover. It was not an ideal time for taking pics, but I never pass up a chance to walk in nature with my camera.

Equipment

Hand-held Nikon d3000. I don't remember which Nikkor lens I was using at the time.

Inspiration

I love documenting my bird sightings with a photograph. Cedar waxwings are beautiful birds, but I rarely get a chance to see them. I saw a flock in the hackberry tree, feeding on berries and had to get some shots. This was my favorite, with the backlighting and just a hint of color. Anyone familiar with birds can recognize the typical waxwing outline and feeding pose.

Editing

I was quite inexperienced with post processing at the time. I used a Microsoft program that came on my computer to adjust the contrast and highlights and cropped to improve the composition.

In my camera bag

Currently I have my Nikon D7100' Nikkor 70-300 lens, Nikkor 18-300 lens, a variety of cleansing cloths, mosquito repellent (never leave home without it in South Texas), plastic garbage bags, flashlights. I'm still building a photography kit that will suit my needs.
