To older Navajos, entering Antelope Canyon was like entering a cathedral. The Navajo would pause before entering to ensure the right frame of mind, prepare for protection and respect. This would also allow them to leave with a uplifted feeling of what Mother Nature has to offer.
In the darkest parts of Antelope Canyon, the top is very narrow and at mid day create shadows as dark as night. Areas at the top have small openings which at the right time of day and year, will allow light to shine through in tight laser like beams.
These sunlight beams will pierce into the darkness of the canyon to reveal the martian like walls. This display will last only minutes, slowly moving across the canyon floor as the sun complete's its daily course towards the west.
Small Particles of sand floating in the air reflect the sunlight, which creates an affect of smoke coming from the sands, and add an even more dramatic effect to the already surreal scenery.

Fantastic photo, beautifully composed. Love the grays and golds compared to the more dramatic colors--reds, oranges, purples--that we often see in this type of photo. And thank you for the detailed explanation.
