Behind The Lens

Location

I made this photo on the way to Ísafjörður along route 61, in the western part of Iceland. It was

Time

The picture was taken at noon. As it was close to winter, the days were short, and the light dim - even more it was a cold cloudy day. It had been snowing the days before, and the road was icy and slippery

Lighting

As it was close to winter, the days were short, and the light was dim - even more as it was a cold cloudy day. It had been snowing the days before, and the road was icy and slippery. The sky was grey, and the surrounding were almost colorless, making it nearly a black and white capture.

Equipment

I used an Olympus OM-D-EM1, with the 12-100 Pro lens. As there was no traffic I just jumped out of the car to make this picture

Inspiration

I wanted to show the isolation and remoteness of Iceland's Westfjords during winter seasons. At times the conditions are so bad that the roads there are closed, but we were lucky to stay ahead of the real bad weather. The environment was almost completely without colors, so I wanted it to appear as a black and white shot.

Editing

I did some minimal post-processing in LR, enhancing the contrast and texture a little, and a bit of sharpening

In my camera bag

I prefer to travel light, so I stick to my Olympus OMD m4/3 gear: 2 OM-D-EM1 bodies and the 12-40, 12-100 and 40-150 PRO lenses

Feedback

Iceland is a dream destination for nature and landscape photographers. The easiest season is summer, but I prefer to spend some time there in autumn or winter. There is much more variety of weather (and light) conditions, and there are less tourists.
