Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a private nature reserve, just north of Huntsville, ON. There is a meadow in the midst of fairly dense bush and the white-tailed deer come to feed just after dawn and just before dusk each day. This was taken just after dawn and although the sun had reached the fawn, it had not reached the spruce trees behind it, so they gave a nice dark backdrop. The deer could not see us, but occasionally sensed something and would look towards us. This fawn turned and gave a look towards me over his back.

Time

Taken about 6:30 am

Lighting

It was all natural lighting

Equipment

This was taken with a Canon 7D Mk II and the 100-400MM f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM lens, on a tripod

Inspiration

I was on a two day white-tailed deer and reflection pond photo trip with a local guide on his private property

Editing

This photo was cropped to be visually appealing

In my camera bag

I shoot with Canon camera/lenses and for wildlife the above set up is my go-to choice. I would love to have a longer Canon lens but am on a modest budget

Feedback

Finding the opportunity to take photos of deer in a natural setting is usually dependant on luck. If you have the opportunity to use a successful guide, then I recommend it. It increases the chances of getting good photos. I have used this guide for taking photos of loons and moose as well as deer over the years and we have always had at least some success.
