Behind The Lens
Location
I have a home-made amateur photo studio created in my basement, and I like to take photos of my black dog, Sammy, against a black backdrop.Time
This was taken in October in the early evening. Because it was getting dark outside, there is some natural light coming from the left which I augmented with a soft box light on the left.Lighting
Black on black is a look I like in photography, so I keep the lighting as natural as possible, so no flash. This photo had a little natural light and a little artificial light.Equipment
This was taken with my Canon 7D Mark II, on a tripod, and my Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM, no flash. It was shot at 1/250 sec. f/2.8 51mm and ISO 1250.Inspiration
I have always liked the look of a black dog against a black backdrop and have taken a few using this scenario.Editing
After I took this photo that day and looked at it Lightroom, I noticed that there were some folds in the cloth backdrop that were also catching the light. So I moved the photo to Photoshop and smoothed out those folds so they were less visible. This gave the photo what I think of as an old-world art look to the background.In my camera bag
At that time, 2017, I didn't have many lenses, so my Canon 7D Mark II was always packed with my 70-200 lens because it and my Canon 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM were the only lenses I had. Now, I have graduated to the Cannon R5, a couple of RF lenses (100-500 and 24-105) and the RF 1.4X Extender, so that is what I carry now.Feedback
Taking a black on black photo takes a lot of practice...so if you have a subject willing to work for treats like Sammy, keep taking multiple photos at multiple exposures and multiple light sources until you get what you want.
