Behind The Lens
Location
Nan Province in Thailand. It’s an unspoilt, rural area which borders Laos.Time
One evening around sunset, I decided to check out this lone tree which dominated the rice paddy.Lighting
All natural light. The sun was setting off the the left of the shot so conditions were rapidly changing.Equipment
This was shot with an Olympus OM-D E-M1 mark ii. I used the extremely versatile 12-40 f2.8 lens at f7.1 iso200 for 1/200s. I shot at 17mm which is a pretty standard 35mm full frame equivalent on my Camera’s micro four thirds sensor. My tripod is a Siri T-025sk. I considered using an ND filter to lengthen the exposure, but I like the little ripples in the water and didn’t want to lose details in the greenery.Inspiration
I had already taken a few shots of this particular tree from a distance and decided to ‘zoom with my feet’ to see what I could capture up close. I was thrilled to find this little stream which provided some nice leading lines towards my subject.Editing
I took several exposures and used Lightroom to process. I only had to tweak the raw file a little bit, adding some vibrance to the greenery and some dehaze to the sky.In my camera bag
When travelling, an Olympus 12-40 f2.8 pro - it’s just so versatile. A Venus Laowa 7.5m f2 prime for wide shots. I also carry an Olympus 75mm f1.8 prime for longer shots. At 150mm full frame equivalent, it gives me plenty of magnification in a very light package and small footprint.Feedback
Invest in air tickets instead of always getting new gear. Take the path less traveled and zoom with your feet when possible. My number one tip for travel Photography would be to learn a language. I’d been studying Thai for 9 months before shooting this and wouldn’t have had the confidence to visit this area without it.
