Location
This was taken at one of Mt Fuji’s smaller lakes - Lake Shoji. It almost always pays off to do a bit of planning and follow the road less travelled.Time
This was taken just before sunrise. Japan’s public transport is superb, but hiring a car made it possible to stop as often and wherever I felt like it.Lighting
Up till now, I’ve only shot with natural/environmental light. The fog in the distance added a bit of mood. If I could change one thing? Perhaps a drone with a speed light over the rowboat in the mid-ground ?Equipment
Olympus OMD EM1 mkii with a 12-40mm f2.8 pro (24-80mm full frame equivalent). This shot was handheld to give me the angle I wanted to get everything in frame.Inspiration
My previous trip to Japan was during winter, when clear skies are rare. This time, I wanted to capture an unobstructed Mt Fuji reflected in one of the 5 surrounding lakes. I arrived at the location the night before, so I didn’t see the boats lined up on the shore until I woke up the next morning to go shooting. They provided the perfect foreground element for the shot.Editing
I did a little bit of exposure tweaking in Lightroom and I lightly dodged around the distant fisherman’s boat. I didn’t want the colours to look oversaturated, so I used a bit of Dehaze on a gradient filter for the sky. If I could change anything, I probably would’ve brightened up the shot a tiny bit.In my camera bag
I like to travel light, so my Olympus EM-1mkii and a 12-40 f2.8 are my staples. I also carry an Olympus 75mm f1.8 for portraits and a Panasonic Leica 25mm f1.4mm for inconspicuous street shooting and after sunset.Feedback
Do a little bit of research and try to get off the beaten path. Japan is an amazingly easy country to travel. Japanese pronunciation is relatively easy, so learning a few simple phrases works wonders and really helps you to escape the tourist trail.
