Behind The Lens

Location

This was shot in a small town called Katoomba right on the edge of the Blue Mountains National Park, New South Wales, Australia.

Time

My partner and I were on a short vacation and woke up to a spooky and misty morning. The weather cleared within a few hours but it was enough time to shoot some keepers.

Lighting

I was so excited with the weather conditions that I didn’t notice that my iso was still set at 800 from the night before. Micro four thirds cameras don’t have a fantastic reputation for handling higher iso but noise removal tools are so good these days, it’s really not an issue.

Equipment

Shot handheld on an Olympus OM-D E-M1 III at 12mm on a 12-40 F2.8 Pro lens.

Inspiration

The mist made everything look extremely cinematic and creepy that morning.

Editing

Not much other than some AI noise removal using Lightroom’s newish AI noise removal (at about 30%) and a touch of colour grading.

In my camera bag

I’m a fan of smaller systems so I carry one 24-80mm equiv zoom and 2 fast primes on either end of that. One at 18mm equiv. and one at 150mm equiv. Lately I’ve been venturing out with just a compact - the Ricoh griiix.

Feedback

Instead of investing in the latest and greatest gear, take time to explore the world around you. When you do, get out of bed and go shooting early.
