Location
The photo was taken in an "Ochaya" or tea house where the Maiko (apprentice Geisha) works, in KyotoTime
It was taken in the late afternoon. As she had an engagement starting at 6 PM, I had to hurry to finish the photo shoot.Lighting
More than the usage of the depth of field to bring the eyes of the viewer toward the face of the maiko, I also wanted the light to be centered on her face. Due to the way the image is constructed, I had to set a light toward me to lighten her.Equipment
I used a Nikon D810 with a 70-200 mm f2.8 zoom.Inspiration
The maiko uses a little mirror in front of her to adjust her make-up, so taking a frontal shot was not an option. I thought that shooting the mirror to capture her whole face and the action she was performing would do the trick.Editing
The whole post-processing was done in LR. Cropping, followed by a standard tone and exposure adjustment. I then use the brushes and radial brushes to adjust the brightness and shadow. A simple regular sharpening ended the process. In my camera bag
Nowadays, I usually have a D850 and both the Nikkor 24-70 mm f2.8 and the 70-200 f2.8 zooms. In addition, for special purposes, I may bring a super fast prime lens such as 85 mm f1.4 or a 24 mm f1.4Feedback
