Love the balloons in such an incredible landscape. I especially like what appears to be the balloons and landscape converging. The balloons point down. The hoodoo like landscape pointing up. Great shot.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken near the town of Goreme, amidst the volcanic spires and fairy chimneys that dot the surreal landscape of the Cappadocia region of Turkey.

Time

This photograph was taken approximately between 7-7:30 AM, when the rising sun was just clearing the far hills and beginning to illuminate the immediate landscape.

Lighting

The lighting was natural sunlight. The rising sun was just clearing the far hills and beginning to illuminate the immediate landscape with a warm and dramatic slanting light.

Equipment

This image was captured with a Tamron 18-200 mm zoom lens mounted on a Sony Alpha 560 digital camera.

Inspiration

For several days I had been documenting the many hot air balloon launches that occur every morning around Goreme. The balloons are inflated in the dark and launched just as the first predawn light appears in the eastern sky. The launched balloons fill the sky and begin a mass descent shortly after sunrise, before ensuing morning winds would make further flight in this rocky terrain dangerous. This entire process offers many picturesque opportunities for photographic documentation. I was not aloft in a balloon and was consequently racing from hill to hill looking for the best vantage points to shoot this spectacle. This image was probably the best I captured, with beautiful morning slant light irradiating the balloons descending on this spectacular landscape.

Editing

The fine natural light made any extensive post-processing unnecessary. Basic adjustments to brightness/contrast, color balance and saturation were all that was needed.

In my camera bag

I like to travel light with a Sony A560 digital SLR, a wide range 18-200 mm Tamron zoom lens, a polarizing filter and some neutral density filters. When convenient I also carry a tripod, but with rapidly changing scenes like this one I usually don't get to set it up and use it.

Feedback

For a photo like this you mainly need to be in the right place at the right time (very early in the morning) , be alert to fast occurring multiple photo ops and take a lot of pictures.
