Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at Monty Turnbow's Paint Horse Ranch north of Longview Texas

Time

The image was taken in the late afternoon light coming through a rather flat overcast sky.

Lighting

The light in this images is entirely contrived and took a little time in Photoshop to create. The sky was covered with a fairly thin layer of Strato-Cumulus cloud allowing me to locate the actual position of the sun. I created a new layer in Photoshop and used the radial blur tool (Zoom Mode) to create a point in the sky where rays were coming from the sun through the cloud and set the opacity to a very low setting so you just tell where the light was coming from. Another layer was used to create what appears to be the sun in the upper right hand corner of the image. Finally I used an adjustment layer to lighten the light falling on the horse and some of the foliage in the scene. The yellows in the trees and the green grass were saturated a little.

Equipment

Nikon D800E , on a Manfroto tripod with a ball mount.

Inspiration

I get to spend a lot of time around horses as my wife Karen trains them as a sort of avocation and this horse, Picante, was one of my favorites. He had a gentle demeanor and enjoyed being around people. I was standing in the pasture as I often do looking for images and Picante looked very calm and placid with the light coming from the upper right corner and new growth grass at his feet, a great subject for an image.

In my camera bag

Nikon D800E, Olympus Stylus Tough, Sony Video Camera that takes 4K video. A variety of pro level NIKON lenses and one SIGMA 150-600mm Sport lens. I own a variety of tripods but generally carry the Manfroto with a ball head mount.

Feedback

To an extent I was prepared for this image because I had taken many images here in the past. Don't hesitate to revisit places that you have taken before. The light is always different and the subjects may present themselves in a different way. There are great apps out there to help with the planning process. Always be prepared for whats coming, know your camera so you can make it do what you want it to do, shoot in RAW, take your time to check settings and exposure, use the rules of composition when appropriate so that you don't have to cut large amounts of image away from the original image. Try as much as possible to get what you want in camera preserving the resolution of the final image. Have fun!
