Another in a series of three images taken before dawn while fly fishing with a friend on the Lower Mountain Fork River in Southeast Oklahoma. The camera is an Olympus Stylus Tough, the newest model, and I am very impressed with the results for a small point and shoot.

Behind The Lens

Location

On a stretch of water called "The Evening Hole" by local fly fishermen in Beaver's Bend State Park, southeast Oklahoma.

Time

Just prior to sunrise in the fall when morning air temps were fairly low.

Lighting

It was pretty simple, I shot into the light provided by the rising sun back lighting the mist . The Olympus Stylus Tough I used for this shot allows you to create both a RAW file and/or a JPG file. I used the RAW enabling me to bring out the details in the foreground in post processing.

Equipment

This was hand held using the Olympus Stylus Tough. I have a difficult time deciding if I am a fisherman who enjoys taking pictures or a photographer who enjoys fly fishing. I can't carry my NIKON kit when I am fishing so I rely upon the Olympus Stylus for on-stream images and I have to say that I am very pleased with the results it produces.

Inspiration

There is a saying about Fly-Fishing that has to do with the beauty of the places where Trout reside and this is well demonstrated at Beaver's Bend. I find the environs of this stream and many others very photogenic and its hard at times to pay attention to my fishing line, I'm too busy taking pictures.

Editing

This image was heavily processed using Lightroom, Photoshop and ACR. The original RAW had little or no detail showing in the foreground but using various tools in ACR I was able to bring out detail in the foreground. The other thing I did was enlarge the moon so that it was more of a feature of the image. The moon was there when I captured the image but it was small enough that it wasn't really an important part of the image. What you see here is what my eye was able to imagine I saw that morning.

In my camera bag

Well that depends, if I am fishing I carry an Olympus Stylus Tough in my Fly-Fishing Vest and that is all. When my primary purpose is photography I carry a NIKON D800E and a large collection of lenses and filters and a Manfrotto Tripod. My kit bag can weigh as much as 60 Lbs when everything is in it.

Feedback

Early mornings and late evenings produce some fantastic images. It's best to know the area you intend to shoot in so you know where the sun is going to peak over the horizon. This can be done either by research (The Photographer's Ephemeris is an important tool along with Google Earth) or by personal experience. I knew about the misty nature of the early morning in this location as well as where the sun would appear based upon past experience. The moon being where it was was an unexpected bonus. My intent had been to get Scott, my fishing buddy, fishing in the morning mist with the early sun back lighting everything. The more time I spend as a photographer the more I find myself planning. Where serendipity plays a role I think you will be more successful if you think hard about what you want in the image and then be there when the time has come to capture it.
