Very judicious use of black and white. It really puts the reflections forward. Well done!

Behind The Lens

Location

I am a pilot and I work as an assistant chief flight instructor at LeTourneau University's flight training facility in Longview Texas. We have many alumni and associates who love to bring their aircraft to our ramp for a visit. This aircraft belongs to a business that supports our program and we very pleased that they brought it along. Rendered the image in Black and White largely because it is from the WWII era and the B&W image seemed more appropriate than color.

Time

Mid Afternoon

Lighting

Because I was at work I had to take whatever I could get in terms of time. This is simply midday lighting on a partly cloudy day.

Equipment

Nikon D800E, hand held, 28-300mm NIKKOR Lens, set to 48mm

Inspiration

I think if you looked at my portfolio it would become apparent that I take images of airplanes for often than anything else and this vintage airplane deserves a lot of photographic attention.

Editing

I used the B&W converter in Photoshop to create this image as well as HDR techniques before going to B&W.

In my camera bag

NIKON D800E, Sigma 150-600 Zoom, Nikon 16mm Fisheye, 14-24mm f/2.8 Zoom, 50mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.8 and 28-300mm Zoom. A variety of filters and two woreless triggers. I carry a Manfroto Tripod with me all the time.

Feedback

In some ways its difficult to get good aircraft pictures because terrorism has made access to the ramp difficult if not impossible in come cases. However there are places you can go to get close up shots of aircraft. Airshows, Observation spaces like Founder's Plaza at DFW, non-secured airports in small communities. You will need a long lens (300mm to 600mm) and a good tripod to hold it allowing for panning as aircraft fly by. WHen taking images of flying aircraft you will need to shoot one to two stops over exposed otherwise the aircraft will be more of a silhouette and you need to shoot at fairly high shutterspeeds. It's a challenge to find a good place to stand and to find a new angle or point of view that hasn't been used by someone already.
