Amazing capture! Think these kind of images are the biggest challenges, making a special image of a fairly common animal. Trying to capture the uniqueness of nature, the individual animal or species. This is an inspiration for me!

Behind The Lens

Location

Tinker Nature Park, near Rochester NY, early spring.

Time

Around 9:00 AM

Lighting

The light was soft and diffused due to the day being overcast.

Equipment

I used my Sony SLT-A65 dSLR with a Tamron 70-300 mm f 4-5.6 lens. This photo was taken at ground level so I didn't use a tripod.

Inspiration

While waiting to photograph hummingbirds I noticed a small pond with some frogs hanging around it. As soon as I got close they went into the water. I decided to wait for them to come back out. That's when I noticed one of them looking at me while trying to hide. I immediately recognize the photographic impact of the frog's stare. The frog didn't stay there long but I was able to capture the moment.

Editing

I processed the file in Adobe Camera Raw to adjust the exposure and get the best dynamic range. I also used Clarity and Detail plug-ins from Topaz Labs to enhance detail and sharpness.

In my camera bag

I carry a Sony SLT-A65 dSLR, Sony 16-55 mm wide angle lens, Tamron 70-300 mm and Tamron 16-300 mm. I also take a compact Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 for fun and creative shots. Extra batteries and memory cards for both cameras, polarized filter, graduated ND filter, and a Manfrotto tripod with a Joystick Head. I also added to my collection a Manfrotto monopod which comes in quite handy when hiking.

Feedback

Be aware of your surroundings. There is so much to see around us that we just miss. Slow down and take time to listen for birds or other animals and familiarize your self with their environment. Once that you find the subject then wait for "the shot", that one image that defines their character at its best. And just have fun making your image!
