Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on a country road near my home. It was so cold that day! Dominique (the model) was a trooper!

Time

This was fairly early in the morning - taken around 10 am. We shot this pretty fast cause we were all freezing. haha. I live in Edmonton, Alberta - so January is not fun to be shooting outside.

Lighting

I shot this all natural light. It was snowing and snow on the ground so it all helped making some beautiful soft light.

Equipment

This was shot on a Canon 5D Mark II and a 50 1.2 lens

Inspiration

This photo was inspired by a music video - it morphed into what you see. I always start out with a loose concept and then depending on our outfits and prop it can change. I think thats where the magic comes - don't over think things!!

Editing

Yes of course ...I never post anything without any post processing. Composition wise - it was a wider photo. I cropped it to bring her in closer. Skin retouching and dodging her eyes (to make them lighter)

In my camera bag

I shoot entirely with primes - since I'm mostly a portrait photographer. My fav lenses are the Canon 50 1.2 ( my go to all uses lens) , 85 1.2 (I call it my beauty lens - it makes everyone look so beautiful straight in the camera), I have a Sigma 35 Art 1.4 for full length shots (all those Sigma Art lenses are magic!!) I also have the 70-200 mm for events or the odd wedding but it mainly collects dust :P

Feedback

If you're trying to recreate something similar and aren't use to shooting with natural light - make sure its an overcast day. Also don't be afraid to get out there in the rain and snow. The camera bodies these days can take a bit of water (at least in my experience) Some of favourite shots ever are in full blown snow storms. Get a model who can emote with their eyes. Get them into character ...if they can feel magical - your photo will most definitely turn out magical!
