Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from the top of the Rialto building in Collins Street Melbourne. [ now closed]

Time

We were on holidays in Melbourne. It had been 40C day and we are having dinner at the restaurant on top when suddenly the sunset started. I headed out to the small deck which was surrounded by wire. I had to hand hold the camera and point the lens through the wire.

Lighting

The strong sunset light mixed with the city and building lights gave the city a fantastic glow. It was just a magic glow for a full 360 degrees

Equipment

The camera was a an Olympus E300, my first DSLR 14mm, 1/4 sec, f3.5, iso 320 Hand held

Inspiration

I always liked sunsets and sun rises and I was just in the right spot at the right time. The light was just amazing

Editing

The post processing was a small crop of over exposed sky from the top, and a little vibrance and sharpening in PS

In my camera bag

These days I carry a Nikon D750, with a nikon 70-200mm F 2.8 A Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 and a Sigma 150-600 f5.6

Feedback

Great sunsets only last a few minutes. You need to know the have location in mind and arrive early enough set up the camera on a tripod. Some great shots can be captured both before and and after the sun goes down. Try different exposures. Often under exposing by 2/3 of a stop can really bring out the colours. You might have to go back on several occasions until that perfect sunset occurs.
