Location
This photo was taken on one of the beautiful sandy beaches of Negril, Jamaica.Time
Just as the last rays of the sun dipped below the horizon, I was lucky to capture this sunset in a glass.Lighting
I took this shot just at sunset, using only the natural light, and used the refraction of the water in the glass to keep from shooting directly at the sun.Equipment
This was shot handheld with a Canon 70d, using a 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6, and using only natural light.Inspiration
My wife and I were walking along the beach at sunset, snapping pictures, when we passed by an open air restaurant. Having seen various pictures of things distorted through water I asked one of the waitstaff if I could just borrow a glass of water for a few minutes. Luckily the waiter was a photographer as well and loved the idea, he came over to watch and soon I had a whole crowd of photographers watching and offering helpful advice.Editing
Very little post processing went into this picture actually; I cleaned up the colors a bit, to bring out some of the detail, and desaturated the already heavily boke background to really make the refracted image in the glass really pop.In my camera bag
In an attempt to be prepared for anything, I have a rather eclectic collection in my bag. I have since upgraded from the Canon 70d to the 5d Mark iii, and have everything from a 24-70mm f/2.8 to an 28-135mm for off the cuff macro, and a Rokinon 24mm f/1.4 for landscapes and astrophotography (one of my personal favorites).Feedback
Reflections and refractions are a great way to spice up a scene. Carry a small glass and a bottle of water with you next time you're shooting in nature and try looking at things from a bit different perspective.
