It is interesting to see the preservation around the base, and hope it survives for many thousands of years! Great shot!

Turnip Rock is located in Port Austin, MI in a place called Point aux barques. The public is not permitted to visit from land, you now need to boat or kayak in order to see the wonderful land formation. Beautiful photo

Location
Pointe Aux Barques, Michigan. In Alaska Bay, Lake Huron, near Port Austin. This can only be accessed by Kayak or boat, as Turnip Rock is located on private property.Time
This photograph was taken after departing Port Austin at day break. Kayaking out of Port Austin to Pointe Aux Barques is a 2-3 hour kayak trip, depending on weather/winds.Lighting
Early morning lighting.Equipment
Canon 5D MarkII. IS 24-105 LensInspiration
I once saw Turnip Rock in a travel brochure and had wanted to get a shot of it myself. Being that the area is private land, the only way to get there is to travel from Port Austin around Pointe Aux Barques, a rather treacherous journey. Navigable via kayaks only during calm seas, as we approached the Pointe, clouds began to roll in, and we had to make a choice, to turn back or head down the coast to Turnip Rock, running the risk of becoming stranded on a private/no-trespassing beach. Because of the weather turning on us, we only had a few minutes to hang around the cove, but I would not be detoured away from pulling up along side the rocky shore to compose this shot.Editing
I used Lightroom to adjust the highlights, the white balance, increased the clarity slightly and adjusted the temperature. In my camera bag
5D Mark II, IS 24-105, ISII 90-200, Canon Speedlithe 580EXII, Polarizing Filter. I have several other flashes, and triggers, but rarely do these go into the field.Feedback
Anyone wishing to capture Turnip Rock by navigating Pointe Aux Barques, depart Port Austin at daybreak. Any wind will cause the major navigation problems as you approach the Pointe. Waves seemingly come from all directions and I cannot imagine safe passage in rough weather. Turnip Rock is private property and is not accessible to the public across public lands. Leave early, and make sure to watch the ever-changing weather patterns closely.
