Behind The Lens

Location

I was flying with a student in the south east practice area or "Aerobatics Box" south east of East Texas Regional Airport. We were about 6500' above the terrain.

Time

If I remember correctly it was mid-afternoon.

Lighting

Natural lighting with the sun relatively high in the sky.

Equipment

A very small camera retailed by Hobby King for use as external cameras on aircraft. The cost was about $40.00. The camera was mounted on a wing tip and faced inboard aimed in such a way as to get the entire length of the airplane.

Inspiration

I teach aerobatic flight and I enjoy photography. The series of images that this image comes from was an experiment to see if the device we used to anchor the camera worked. It did. Have a look at one of my aerobatic videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nhUlRgkPVQ

Editing

No, what you see here is pretty much what we got out of the camera.

In my camera bag

Nikon D800E, A variety of Nikkor Lenses including the 28-300mm Zoom, 85mm f/1.8, 50mm f/1.8, 14-24mm f/2.8, 16mm Fisheye, an older Nikkor 28-70mm micro, and a SIGMA 150-600mm Sport zoom. There is a variety of filters in the kit, a manfroto tripod with a Benro Ball Head and two different types of wireless remote releases.

Feedback

Experiment. There are fairly cheap cameras out there that can be used in difficult situations where they could be lost without too much financial trauma, they will often survive the experiment and produce some great results.
